Frequencies for focus

Concentration is a topic where a lot gets promised: 40 Hz for Gamma waves, "superlearning", measurably higher IQ. Most of it does not survive sober scrutiny. What remains is still useful — just for a different reason than the one usually claimed.

The underrated effect: masking

The probably most important reason frequencies help while you work has little to do with brainwaves. It is called acoustic masking.

An open-plan office, the street outside the window, a conversation two desks away: background noise costs concentration not through its volume but through its unpredictability. Every new sound briefly pulls attention away. A steady tone lays itself over this and makes those spikes smaller — not because it is louder, but because it reduces the difference in level.

What makes it particularly effective is that pure frequencies contain no language. Music with lyrics competes directly with verbal thinking — while writing, reading or programming that is measurably disruptive. A sine tone does not have this problem. That is the tangible, unspectacular advantage, and it holds regardless of what you make of brainwave entrainment.

On the frequently cited 40 Hz: it comes from Gamma research, among other things work on neural synchronisation. Marketing turned that into "40 Hz makes you smarter". Research does not support that leap. As a binaural beat, 40 Hz is also shrill and unpleasant for many people. If you try it: briefly and quietly.

What is supported — and what is not

Sorted honestly:

  • Well supported: that background speech disrupts cognitive tasks, and that steady, speech-free sound reduces this effect.
  • Moderately supported: improvements in attention and working memory from binaural beats. Positive studies exist, but effect sizes are small and results inconsistent. Some studies find nothing at all.
  • Not supported: lasting cognitive enhancement, "superlearning", higher intelligence or a treatment for ADHD. Anyone advertising that goes considerably beyond what the data allows.

Realistically: frequencies do not replace a good working structure. They are an aid that makes an existing structure audible — and that is precisely where their practical value lies.

Tying frequencies to work blocks

The most effective use has less to do with the Hertz value than with conditioning. If the same sound only ever plays during focused work, after a few weeks it becomes the start signal itself — your brain associates it with the state.

Here is how to build that:

  1. One sound, one kind of task. Use the same tone exclusively for focused work, not casually while answering email or tidying up.
  2. One block as a playlist. For example 20 minutes of Beta around 16 Hz, then 5 minutes of Alpha. The end of the playlist is the break — no separate Pomodoro app needed.
  3. Start quietly. The tone should fall below the threshold of notice once you are into the task. If you consciously hear it, it is too loud.
  4. Not for every task. For calls, meetings or heavily verbal work it brings little to nothing. For repetitive or deeply concentrated work, the most.
  5. Keep it identical for two weeks. Only then does the association form that this is actually about.

Frequently asked questions

Which frequency is best for concentration?

Binaural beats in the Beta range between 14 and 18 Hz are the usual starting point for focused work. For creative tasks many find Alpha around 10 Hz more pleasant. There is no value that is optimal for everyone — try one range consistently for two weeks.

Does 40 Hz really improve concentration?

The 40 Hz claims trace back to Gamma research, but the leap from there to "more concentration in daily life" is not scientifically supported. As a binaural beat, 40 Hz is also often experienced as unpleasant. Beta in the 14–18 Hz range is the more practical entry point.

Are frequencies better than music for working?

For tasks involving language — writing, reading, programming — usually yes, because pure tones do not compete with verbal thinking. Music with lyrics demonstrably interferes here. For mechanical tasks the difference is small and personal preference decides.

Do I need headphones to work with frequencies?

Strictly, for binaural beats, because each ear needs its own frequency. Pure tones such as 432 Hz work through speakers too — in an open-plan office headphones still make sense because they add masking.

How long should I listen while working?

A work block of 25 to 50 minutes is a good frame, followed by a break. Continuous sound over hours wears off: the tone loses its signalling value if it always plays.

Do frequencies help with ADHD?
