Frequencies for meditation

Of all the use cases, meditation is the oldest. Long before anyone could measure Hertz, traditions from Tibet to European monasteries knew that a sustained tone does something to the mind. Singing bowls, mantras, Gregorian chant — everywhere the same principle: a steady sound that carries attention.

Frequency apps continue that line, only with a sine generator instead of a bowl. The more interesting question is therefore not which frequency — but how you use sound in practice. Because there are two fundamentally different ways.

Sound as an anchor or as a backdrop

As an anchor, the tone is the object of your attention. You orient towards it the way you otherwise would towards the breath; when thoughts wander, you return to it. This is especially helpful at the beginning, because a sound is more tangible than the breath — it is simply there, without you having to do anything.

As a backdrop, the tone runs in the background while you attend to something else: breath, body sensation, a phrase. Here the sound's job is more modest — it covers disturbing noise and marks the space as a meditation space.

Both work, but not at the same time. Anyone who does not decide oscillates between the two and ends up meditating on the question of what to attend to. Decide before the session.

What is supported — and what is not

A clear separation is worth making here, because a great deal gets claimed in the meditation space.

Well supported are the effects of meditation itself: on perceived stress, attention regulation and emotional reactivity. There is extensive research on this.

Moderately supported is that binaural beats can support relaxed states — see the science of binaural beats. Studies on Theta beats and meditation depth exist but are small and methodologically inconsistent.

Not supported is anything attributing an independent spiritual effect to frequencies: chakra alignment, opening levels of consciousness, DNA effects. Such statements belong to a tradition's narrative, not to science. You can find them interesting without treating them as established — the two levels simply should not be mixed.

One point is worth stating plainly: many experienced meditators prefer silence. Anyone practising for years rarely needs an acoustic support and sometimes even finds it distracting. Sound is most helpful for beginners and for restless days — that is not a shortcoming but a sensible framing.

Building a session

  1. Decide the length beforehand, not during the session. 10 minutes at the start, later 20 to 30.
  2. Arrive with Alpha or a pure tone. The first minutes are for landing, not yet for depth.
  3. Then Theta for the main part. Around 6 Hz is the usual starting point.
  4. Set it up as a playlist. A sequence with fixed durations replaces glancing at the clock — and the end of the list is the end of the session, with no alarm jolting you out of it.
  5. Keep the volume low. The sound should carry, not lead.

If you notice partway through that the tone disturbs rather than helps: switch it off. That is not a failure but an observation — and observation is the actual practice anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Which frequency is best suited to meditation?

Binaural beats in the Theta range around 6 Hz are the classic starting point, because that range is associated with deep relaxation. Without headphones, 528 Hz is a good entry. Which variant feels coherent differs from person to person.

Isn't silence better than sound when meditating?

For many experienced meditators, yes. Sound is most helpful when the mind is restless or the practice is still new — it gives attention something tangible to hold. With growing experience the support often becomes unnecessary, and that is a good sign.

Can I combine frequencies with guided meditations?

Yes, but sparingly. Spoken guidance already occupies attention; an additional tone should stay very quiet in the background. Two competing anchors make a session more restless rather than deeper.

Do certain frequencies open the chakras?

That mapping comes from spiritual traditions and is not scientifically supported. You can use frequencies within a tradition, but the attribution should be named for what it is: handed-down teaching, not a measurement result.

How long should a session last?

At the beginning 10 minutes is more realistic than 30 — regularity beats length by a wide margin. Those with an established practice usually find the right frame between 20 and 30 minutes.

Do I need headphones to meditate?

For binaural beats, yes, because the effect requires two separate frequencies. For pure Solfeggio tones, speakers are enough, which many find more comfortable when meditating since nothing sits on the body.
