Frequencies for sleep

In the evening the mind is often still stuck in the day: thoughts circling, the body tired but not calm. This is exactly where sound frequencies come in — not as a sleeping aid, but as an acoustic frame that gives the nervous system a reliable signal: the day is over.

This page answers three questions: which frequency ranges are worth considering at night, what is actually supported by research and what is not — and what an application looks like that genuinely changes something after two weeks.

The relevant frequency ranges for the evening

Two completely different things are routinely mixed up in this topic: brainwave ranges (measured in Hz — frequencies of brain activity, roughly 0.5 to 30 Hz) and audible tones (also in Hz, but in the range of about 20 to 20,000 Hz). Both are called "Hertz" but mean fundamentally different things.

Important: a binaural beat of 3 Hz does not mean you hear a 3 Hz tone — you could not hear that at all. It emerges as the difference between two audible tones, for example 200 Hz in the left ear and 203 Hz in the right. Our article on the science of binaural beats explains the mechanism in detail.

What the research says — and what it does not

Separated honestly, because sleep is a topic where a great deal gets promised:

  • Best supported: relaxation and anxiety-reducing effects. A meta-analysis by Garcia-Argibay and colleagues (2019, Psychological Research) found measurable effects of binaural beats on anxiety scores across several studies. People who become calmer in the evening usually fall asleep more easily — that is the plausible pathway.
  • Partially studied, inconsistent: direct effects on sleep quality and time to fall asleep. There are studies with positive results, but small samples, differing protocols and rarely any blinding. No reliable promise of effect can be derived from this.
  • Not supported: that a particular frequency treats sleep disorders, replaces medication, or works the same for everyone. Anyone promising that is promising too much.

Put realistically: frequencies are a ritual and relaxation tool. A large part of the effect probably comes from taking twenty quiet minutes at all, with no screen glowing — and sound makes that time structured and repeatable.

How to build an evening routine

  1. Choose one frequency, not five. To start: a Delta beat around 3 Hz for falling asleep, or 174 Hz as a pure tone if headphones bother you.
  2. Headphones only for binaural beats. They strictly require stereo separation. Pure tones like 174 Hz or 432 Hz work through speakers too — usually more comfortable for sleeping.

Quieter is better than louder. The tone should fill the room, not hold your attention.

The advantage of a sequence over a single frequency: it can trace the natural path into sleep instead of starting straight in the deep-sleep range while you are still wide awake in bed.

Why sound quality matters here

A sine tone is only calming if it is generated cleanly. Distortion, clicks at loop transitions or an inaccurate frequency create exactly the restlessness you do not need at night.

Because a lot gets claimed about smartphone playback quality and very little gets measured, we checked it with an oscilloscope: the frequency output matched the displayed value exactly, and the curve was a clean sine wave with no visible harmonics. Frequently asked questions

Which frequency is best for falling asleep?

There is no single best frequency for everyone. The most commonly used are binaural beats in the Delta range between 1 and 4 Hz, because that matches the frequency band of deep sleep. If you dislike headphones, a calm single tone such as 174 Hz often works just as well. Try one variant consistently for two weeks before switching.

Do I need headphones to fall asleep?

For binaural beats, yes — the effect only occurs when each ear receives its own frequency. For pure tones such as 174 Hz or 432 Hz sounds, speakers are enough, which is usually more comfortable for sleeping. Falling asleep with headphones in is neither comfortable nor ideal for your ears in the long run.

How long should I listen to the frequencies?

20 to 35 minutes is a good guideline. Shorter rarely does much, considerably longer brings no recognisable additional benefit. A playlist with fixed durations per frequency is practical here: it ends by itself, so playback does not continue all night.

Can frequencies treat sleep disorders?

No. Frequencies are a relaxation tool, not a medical device and not a therapy. They can support an evening routine but do not replace treatment. Persistent trouble falling or staying asleep, strong daytime fatigue or suspected sleep apnoea should be assessed by a doctor.

Is it bad to sleep with sound playing?

For most people it is unproblematic as long as the volume is low and playback ends after a while. Continuous sound throughout the night can disturb sleep architecture and is therefore not recommended — which is exactly why a playlist with a defined total length is the better solution than an endless loop.

Do frequencies work the same for everyone?

No, responses vary considerably between individuals. Some find Delta beats immediately calming, others prefer low single tones. That is normal and no sign that anything is going wrong — it is a reason to experiment calmly.
